North Korea occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula, bordering China, Russia and South Korea across the demilitarised zone. Pyongyang is laid out with wide avenues and monuments; the country also keeps the mountain temples of Myohyangsan and the crater lake of Chonji on Mount Paektu. Entry is possible only with an organised, escorted group on a pre-agreed route.
