Panama joins North and South America across a narrow isthmus cut by the interoceanic canal. The Miraflores locks are open for watching ships pass, and Panama City sets skyscrapers beside the colonial quarter of Casco Viejo. On the Caribbean side lies the San Blas archipelago of the Guna people; in the highlands Boquete grows coffee. It stays hot and humid all year.
