What to Do If Your Hotel in Sochi Suddenly Closes: The Green Flow Experience

The Green Flow hotel at Rosa Khutor shut its doors, leaving guests without refunds and staff without wages. How to file claims correctly and where to get help – practical tips.

The Green Flow shutdown: what happened?

At the end of August 2024 one of the hotels on the Rosa Khutor resort – Green Flow – abruptly stopped operating. Guests who had already arrived found the entrance locked, and the staff suddenly had no salary. According to the affected visitors, the hotel, which marketed itself as a “healing‑hotel”, had been running since 2014 and switched brand and concept in 2017. At the time of the closure it offered about 165 rooms, located in the Estosadok settlement, just a few hundred metres from the lift.

How did the affected guests react?

One traveller, Svetlana, had booked four nights at Green Flow (24‑27 August). When she arrived on the 25th she saw the closed doors and immediately filed a claim for the 43 200 ruble she had paid. She says the hotel never answered either about a timeline or the refund procedure. Other guests also lodged complaints, pointing out that service quality had already been slipping before the shutdown.

Former workers say they haven’t been paid since June. One employee went to the regional labour inspectorate and the Krasnodar Krai prosecutor’s office, but so far has received no compensation. Another reports the same problem. Rosa Khutor confirmed it is aware of the delayed wages, but stressed that Green Flow is an independent entity and that a new management company is currently being installed.

How did Rosa Khutor respond?

The resort’s press service said it is ready to help the affected guests. Starting 1 September it offered to place Green Flow’s guests in the five‑star Rosa Springs hotel and to give them access to the resort’s infrastructure – ski lifts, beach areas and other services. The resort also promised to arrange a meeting with former Green Flow staff to discuss their arrears.

What should a traveller do if the hotel is closed?

  1. Gather evidence – booking confirmations, payment receipts, any correspondence with the hotel. The more proof you have, the easier it is to defend your rights.
  2. Send a written claim – mail it by registered post or email, requesting a refund. Keep a copy and the sending confirmation.
  3. Notify the resort administration – Rosa Khutor now acts as an intermediary; its support can speed up the refund or direct you to the new manager.
  4. Contact consumer‑rights authorities – if the hotel stays silent, file a complaint with Rospotrebnadzor or take the case to court. Having documents on hand makes the process less painful.
  5. Watch for news about the new management – sometimes the incoming operators assume responsibility for outstanding refunds.

How to help staff left without wages?

  • Document the employment relationship – contract, payslips, income statements.
  • File complaints with the labour inspectorate – include every detail: dismissal dates, amount owed.
  • Approach the prosecutor’s office – if the inspectorate does nothing.
  • Seek the resort’s support – as the administration indicated, they are willing to organise a meeting with representatives of the former hotel.

What to watch out for when choosing a hotel in Sochi?

The Green Flow episode shows why you should check a hotel’s reputation beforehand. Pay attention to:

  • An official website and up‑to‑date contact information.
  • Reviews on independent platforms.
  • Licensing details and the managing company.
  • A flexible cancellation policy.

Bottom line

Green Flow’s closure left guests without refunds and staff without pay, but Rosa Khutor took on part of the responsibility, offering alternative accommodation and promising assistance with disputes. If you find yourself in a similar spot, act quickly: record every contact, involve the resort administration and, if needed, the proper authorities. That approach gives you the best chance of getting your money back and securing fair compensation.
