Mauritania covers north-west Africa: the Sahara fills most of the country, with the Atlantic along its western edge. Nouakchott is known for a fish market where boats land straight onto the sand. Deep in the desert stand the caravan towns of Chinguetti and Ouadane with their libraries of old manuscripts. Near Atar lies the Richat Structure, a vast ring visible from orbit.
